ABSTRACT

Latin America and the Caribbean is between regions the world with the highest number of Covid-19 deaths. What is certain is that some factors allow the continent to suffer more damage and have greater difficulty in facing the pandemic, the objective of this research situated in the field of Fundamentals of Environmental Education is to understand this situation at first, and then seek to point out alternatives for the region. These alternatives are found from the horizon of environmental justice for the post-Covid-19. The study follows a methodological approach of Philosophical Hermeneutics. as perspectives the study points to: adoption of Eco socialism, change in the energy mix;change in consumption practices;change in human-nature relations, new ways of bringing nations together, overcoming the colonialist model;strengthening of potential and overcoming the discourse of poverty;Latin American solidarity as a possibility to overcome social exclusion;the reinvention of more democratic political systems with the effective participation of the population;appreciation of Latin American identity, based on the recognition of Traditional Peoples;and facing the postponement of the discussion on climate change. © 2023, University of Cienfuegos, Carlos Rafael Rodriguez. ABSTRACT

Death has become increasingly visible on social networks, especially after COVID-19, and Facebook addresses that with double standards: while some profiles remain active, others turn into memorials. This article investigates how Facebook's system deals with dead users' profiles either to support or restrict interactions concerning users' deaths. Our qualitative analysis of data from 54 public profiles of people who died between June 2020 and March 2021 showed that (i) Facebook fails to communicate the criteria for transforming profiles into memorials;(ii) no information about their contacts of deceased users' profiles is given;(iii) the frequency of interaction with memorials and with active profiles is different;(iv) profiles' privacy settings shape interaction. Our results exemplify how a sociotechnical system influences people's interactions with dead users' profiles. We herein highlight implications for interaction design and evaluation, besides the need to consider interaction as existence, which raises big challenges to the Human Computer Interaction (HCI) community.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: This paper is one of the first studies to examine specificities, including limits of mindfulness at work in an African organisational context, whilst dealing with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It specifically addresses the role of organisational and managerial support systems in restoring employee wellbeing, social connectedness and attachment to their organisations, in order to overcome the exclusion caused by the ongoing pandemic. Design/methodology/approach: The study uses a qualitative research methodology that includes interviews as the main data source. The sample comprises of 20 entrepreneurs (organisational leaders) from Ghana and Nigeria. Findings: The authors found that COVID-19-induced worries restricted the practice of mindfulness, and this was prevalent at the peak of the pandemic, particularly due to very tough economic conditions caused by reduction in salaries, and intensified by pre-existing general economic and social insecurities, and institutional voids in Africa. This aspect further resulted in lack of engagement and lack of commitment, which affected overall team performance and restricted employees' mindfulness at work. Hence, quietness by employees even though can be linked to mindfulness was linked to larger psychological stress that they were facing. The authors also found leaders/manager's emotional intelligence, social skills and organisational support systems to be helpful in such circumstances. However, their effectiveness varied among the cases. Originality/value: This paper is one of the first studies to establish a link between the COVID-19 pandemic and mindfulness limitations. Moreover, it is a pioneering study specifically highlighting the damaging impact of COVID-19-induced concerns on leader–member exchange (LMX) and team–member exchange (TMX) relationships, particularly in the African context. It further brings in a unique discussion on the mitigating mechanisms of such COVID-19-induced concerns in organisations and highlights the roles of manager's/leader's emotional intelligence, social skills and supportive intervention patterns. Finally, the authors offer an in-depth assessment of the effectiveness of organisational interventions and supportive relational systems in restoring social connectedness following a social exclusion caused by COVID-19-induced worries. © 2023, Obinna Alo, Ahmad Arslan, Anna Yumiao Tian and Vijay Pereira.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: The paper explores how consumer behavior for purchasing impulse products changed in the complex and disruptive (emergency) situation of the COVID-19 pandemic when the customer is shopping in-home and not visiting the offline stores in an emerging economy context. This paper further explores how digital transformations like the use of blockchain technology can aid offline/omnichannel retailers in reviving sales via permission marketing for impulse products. Design/methodology/approach: The authors followed a qualitative research design and conducted 24 personal interviews with millennials and 15 interviews with offline/omnichannel retailers from an emerging economy. The data collected were analyzed using the thematic analysis procedure. Findings: The authors discuss their findings under three themes – customers' conscious impulse buying during the pandemic, customers' unconscious impulse buying during the pandemic, and a viable solution for retailers in response to the pandemic. Practical implications: The authors suggest that marketers primarily from an offline/omnichannel store should adapt to permission marketing and use technologies like blockchain for the digital transformation of their marketing strategies. Doing so can help offline retailers minimize future damages in the retail sector during emergency situations. Originality/value: This paper is one of the first that explores how impulse – pure, suggestion, planned and reminder – purchases got affected during the COVID-19 pandemic disruptions in an emerging economy. This paper is also one of the first to explore the role of permission marketing and digital transformation by the use of blockchain in helping offline retailers in forming swift trust and practice trust-based marketing. © 2022, Emerald Publishing Limited.

ABSTRACT

Copyright © 2022

ABSTRACT

The Happy Child Program (Programa Crianca Feliz-PCF, in Portuguese) reaches 1.4 million Brazilian children under three years of age with home visits aimed at promoting neuro-psychomotor development. Based on a conceptu-al model, PCF implementation and impact were evaluated in a randomized study in 30 munici-palities. A total of 3,242 children were allocated to the intervention (IG) or control (CG) group, 80.0% of whom were prospectively followed up from late 2018 to late 2021. Development was assessed by the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ3). During the three-year study period, visits were replaced by virtual contacts for an average of 12 months due to COVID-19. At the endline sur-vey, intent-to-treat analyses showed mean scores of 203.3 in the IG and 201.3 in the CG. Addi-tional analyses using instrumental variables and propensity scores matching also showed no effect, since the number of contacts with the program was not associated with ASQ3 scores. No impact was observed on stimulation, responsive interac-tions or psychological attributes of children. The implementation study revealed low coverage in the IG, contamination of the CG, deficiencies in management and low quality of visits in many municipalities. The study did not demonstrate an impact of PCF implemented under routine condi-tions, but provides elements for its improvement. ABSTRACT

In a society marked by the digital issue and the global pandemic by COVID-19, museums have experienced the need to join new social platforms where the youngest audiences are. This context has led to an intensification of the use of these channels, as well as a reconfiguration of communication strategies in the digital environment by museums. This research analyses how the Museo Nacional del Prado uses the TokTok platform within its brand strategy and studies its production of short video content, a characteristic format of this social network. To this end, a case study was conducted in which a structured interview with personnel from the museum's communication and social networks area was preformed, as well as a content analysis for which an ad hoc analytical guide was prepared. The results show that the narrative structure and the language used are always adapted to the public and the platform with rigour and respect, using an informal register with the aim of transmitting knowledge while still connecting more efficiently with the consumption pattern of the social network.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 global pandemic has transformed work and employment patterns within organizations. Two key emerging trends visible at the organization level are as follows. First, employees being asked to leave (which has mostly been seen within the aviation, hospitality, and travel industries) and second, employees asking to work part-time or on a contractual basis (e.g. within the education and healthcare sectors). This so-called ‘new normal’ has also given rise to an unprecedented increase and diffusion of digital workforces being engaged either full or part time within organizations. Thus, through our study, we aimed to contribute from a theoretical standpoint by exploring this phenomenon through the lenses of swift trust theory (STT) and psychological contract theory (PCT). Our goal was to understand how firms use gamification to engage their digital gig workforce. We collected our data from organizations that used some form of gamification in the process of engaging their employees and extended our inquiry to understand whether they did the same in engaging their gig workforces. We restricted our data to only those firms that had engaged white-collar gig workers. Overall, our study contributes to the literature by extending the theoretical debate pertaining to the use of STT and PCT theory to understand the phenomenon of digital gig workforce engagement and productivity. © 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The pandemic for the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) brought many uncertainties about which laboratory parameters would be most suitable during the evolution of COVID 19. Objectives: Correlate the results of the blood count (BC), the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (N/LR), the C-reactive protein (CRP) and morphological findings of individuals diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection through Polymerase Chain Reaction in Real Time (RT-PCR) in a private laboratory in Belém, Pará, from March to September 2020. Materials and Methods: Retrospective study with 30 individuals, of both sexes, any age and clinical complaint, of home or hospital origin who underwent BC, CRP and RT-PCR for COVID 19 until the 8th day of infection. Morphological changes were analyzed after selecting the slides for these patients. Results: Sample composed of 15 men and 15 women, aged between 7 and 92 years. Of these 12/30 individuals were at home and 18/30 were hospitalized. The main complaints were fever, malaise, diarrhea and respiratory distress. The statistical study showed a direct dependency relationship between increases in N/LR, CRP and the need for hospitalization (p = 0.0005). Morphological analysis showed hyposegmented neutrophils with toxic granulations, vacuolated monocytes, and reactive lymphocytes with basophilic cytoplasm. Conclusion: Our results associate intermediate and elevated levels of N/LR with increased CRP and disease severity, however, unrelated to the morphological findings in neutrophils, lymphocytes and monocytes that were common to all patients diagnosed up to the 8th day of infection.

ABSTRACT

This article examines the Google Trends data related to the second COVID-19 wave in India. We investigate the phenomenon of cyberchondria, which potentially causes individuals to avoid getting tested and quarantined directly upon experiencing symptoms for fear of losing their salaries or jobs. We utilize Google Trends data to predict future disease statistics, like the pandemic's impact on human activities and health-related issues in India. By means of a bootstrapped Pearson correlation, a time-lead correlation, and a quantile regression, we found a strong relationship between Google Trend searches and COVID-19 cases. Contextualizing the second COVID-19 wave in India through the lenses of cyberchondria and protection motivation theory, our article notes that, when people develop COVID-19 symptoms, they turn to Google for confirmation and treatment, rather than getting themselves checked early, only getting medically tested, and treated when their health deteriorates. At that stage, given the patients’critical conditions, hospitalization is the only option. This places an unsustainable burden on hospitals, resulting in capacity constraints and increased mortality rates. We suggest using Google Trends data to forecast COVID-19 waves and mobilize the health infrastructure to save lives and facilitate friction-free growth. IEEE

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION We have previously described AUTO1, a CD19 CAR with a fast off-rate CD19 binding domain, designed to reduce CAR-T immune toxicity and improve engraftment. Its clinical activity has been tested in r/r paediatric and adult B-ALL. Cumulatively, this data confirms the intended function of the receptor, with low levels of CRS/ICANS and long-term engraftment of CAR T-cells observed in both patient groups. Recently, CAR-T therapy has been explored in indolent lymphomas such as follicular (FL) and mantle cell lymphoma (MCL), but a high incidence of toxicity including Grade 3-4 ICANS has been reported. We have initiated testing of AUTO1 in the setting of indolent and high-grade B-NHL and CLL (NCT02935257). METHODS Manufacturing: CAR T-cell products were generated using a semi-automated closed process from non-mobilised leukapheresate. Study design: Subjects ≥ 16y underwent lymphodepletion with fludarabine (30mg/m 2 x3) and cyclophosphamide (60mg/kg x1) prior to AUTO1 infusion, with the exception of the DLBCL cohort who additionally received a single dose of pembrolizumab (200mg) on day -1 to potentiate CAR-T expansion. AUTO1 dose varies based on the indication. Split dosing of 230 x10

ABSTRACT

This article aims to analyze the distribution of deaths by COVID-19 in Brazilian municipalities and its relationship with socioeconomic aspects (income) until the data of July 14, 2020. A methodology was based on the selection of spatial autocorrelation based on the Global Index Moran and the Local Moran Index (LISA) in its univariate and bivariate forms. A univariate form was used to investigate the distribution of the Mortality Rate by COVID-19 (CMD), while the bivariate form was used to verify spatial autocorrelation between the variables TMC (dependent variable) and MHDI Income (independent variable) in Brazilian municipalities until the data of July 14, 2020. The results show the presence of clusters formed from groups of municipalities with high CMD values, mainly in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil. In addition, a negative autocorrelation was found between the variables TMC and MHDI Income, with emphasis on large territorial portions of the North and Northeast regions. The number of cases of COVID-19 in a geographical area and the income of its population are essential factors for understanding the distribution of habits related to this disease.

ABSTRACT

Purpose This study aims to evaluate the impact of perceived cause- related marketing (perceived-CRM) on the repurchase intention (CRIN). Besides, brand image (BIMA) and customer satisfaction (CSAT) connect this relationship as mediating variables. Especially, the role of perceived corporate social responsibility (perceived-CSR) contributed to this nexus between perceived-CRM and BIMA, perceived-CRM and CSAT in emerging economies. Design/methodology/approach The paper follows a quantitative approach. Based on a comprehensive literature review on perceived-CSR, perceived-CRM , BIMA, CSAT and repurchase intention, the authors evaluate the impact of those constructs on repurchase intention in an emerging market. The study sample was composed of 395 responses covering customers of consumer goods. The study uses the Smart PLS-SEM version 3.3.2 to analyze the data. Findings The findings revealed significant contributions to the extant CRM literature in some ways. This study's outcomes contribute to extending the existing literature on CRM and CSR. Specifically, the extension focuses on the mediating and moderating effects of BIMA, CSAT and perceived-CSR, respectively, in the relationship between perceived-CRM and CRIN. Moreover, the novelty of this study lies in providing a new approach to the influence of perceived-CRM on CRIN, with the mediating of BIMA, CSAT and moderating effects perceived-CSR integrated into a conceptual model. Practical implications From a management perspective, the contribution of this study plays a very important role in strategic planning to enhance competitive advantage and improve business performance on a sustainable basis. This sustainability is founded on an insight into how changes in contextual factors affect the perception and consumer behavior of millennials in fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) market, especially in a context of Covid-19 global crisis. It is important to emphasize that genuineness and transparency in all activities and communications are a prerequisite in today's sensitive context. The application of acquired insight into practice will help businesses operating in the consumer sector improve brand reputation and CSAT. As a result, this leads to enhanced competitive advantage of the business in the market, improved market performance and ultimately to an improvement in the overall performance of the enterprise. Originality/value This is the first study that explores the moderating role of perceived CSR on the nexus between perceived-CRM with brand image (BIMA) and CSAT to the best of our knowledge. Besides, the study also discovers the mediating role of BIMA and CSAT between perceived-CRM and repurchase-intention in an emerging economy. Findings in this study provided additional evidence to the increasingly important roles of perceived-CRM and perceived-CSR in creating win-win relationships with customers, aiming to solve specific social causes jointly. Further, the perceived-CRM and perceived-CSR mechanisms help businesses enhance their intangible assets and competitive advantages through enhanced BIMA and stronger CRIN. In the current context, the business environment is changing rapidly due to many factors that lead to increased competition at a global level. Therefore, improving competitive advantage is a mandatory condition for businesses to survive and develop sustainably.

ABSTRACT

With the Covid-19 pandemic, death has become an increasingly present and visible phenomenon on social networks. On Facebook, there is not a homogeneous treatment of death among deceased users' profiles: some remain active, whereas others are turned into memorials, but the criteria for this transformation are not clear. In both cases, privacy settings limit the interaction. These different possibilities give rise to different interactions and reactions among users. This paper addresses how dead users' profiles, multiplied due to the current pandemic, have been treated by Facebook's social-technical system, in comparison to possible posthumous interactions in the physical world. Our main objective is to understand to what extent Facebook's technical system supports or restricts social interactions concerning users' deaths. We carried out a qualitative exploratory analysis of data from 54 Facebook profiles belonging to people who passed away between June 2020 and March 2021. Among other results, we noticed: that Facebook fails to publicize the criteria for transforming active profiles into memorials and who are their heir contacts;that there is a difference in the amount and frequency of interactions between profiles transformed into memorials and those that remain active;and that profiles' privacy settings interfere with social interaction. This situation directly influences the ways other users relate or not with such profiles, which is an object of paramount importance in Human-Computer Interaction studies, especially when considering interaction as existence. © 2021 ACM.

ABSTRACT

COVID19 has had enormous consequences in the media. The pandemic has affected journalism by encouraging new informational newspaper consumption trends. This phenomenon has inevitably changed newspaper newsrooms since print versions started to decline in favor of digital ones. Since the beginning of the mentioned health crisis, information provided by media has become a highly citizenship demand. The study of the dynamics of information consumption is very relevant for understanding the potential journalism business transformation nowadays and in the years to come. Such a health crisis might open a scenario of opportunities and challenges to face by journalism worldwide. The objective of this research is to analyze the influence of COVID19 on newspaper digital edition consumption patterns. We have conducted an exploratory investigation based on the secondary data from Similarweb. Data focus on providing a portrait of Colombian newspapers reading habits during the most critical moments of COVID 19, the outbreak, from March to May 2020 (confinement and first wave), and the following months, from September to November 2020 (second wave). The results confirm the high impact of Covid-19 on digital edition demand on 15 Colombian newspapers during the first wave. Citizens who have traditionally been far away from media might have now been connected with media. However, results also reveal a dramatic decrease in unique visitors in the second wave, thus the potential audience benefits for media and advertisers might have been considered a missing opportunity to retain and maintain Covid-19 outbreak readership habits. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: This paper documents and links firm- and country-level outcomes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) by portraying how the Chinese economy has fared during the COVID-19 crisis. It does so by shedding light on the factors that determine the effectiveness of health policies implemented in China. Design/methodology/approach: Unlike the prior literature, in which lagging performance measures are used, the authors use leading indicators with event study methodology to develop effectiveness scores and identify the determinants of effectiveness, including financial variables, firm infection, geographical location of the spread, travel bans, lockdown periods, policies of home quarantine, health innovations and other innovative measures undertaken by the Chinese authorities. Findings: The detailed disaggregated results show many dimensions where abnormal returns are indeed associated with various health policies and that the effectiveness, influenced by firm size, profitability, firm infection and location. The results remain robust when the authors control for various event windows and models and provide evidence of a strong UNSDG link, which the authors draw up a list. Research limitations/implications: Apart from the quantitative analysis approach, future studies can complement and add further insights by utilizing qualitative research approaches. Practical implications: The results offers robust evidence for policy-makers and firm managers on how a crisis of such proportions and subsequent health policies is affecting different firms and why. Social implications: The study shows how COVID-19 health policies open a new dimension in terms of energy demand reduction and lower emissions, factors linking to the UNSDGs. Originality/value: The study is the first to show detailed disaggregated results across many dimensions where abnormal returns are indeed associated with various health policies and that the effectiveness, influenced by firm size, profitability, firm infection and location. © 2021, Emerald Publishing Limited.
